1) Types of hearing loss

There are several types of hearing loss including:

Conductive Hearing Loss

There is an issue in either the outer or middle ear and sound cannot pass efficiently. Ear infections, earwax , eardrum perforation, and various middle ear disorders can cause this type of hearing loss.

Sensorineural Hearing Loss

Any damage to the inner ear or auditory nerve causes this type of hearing loss

Aging, loud noise, congenital causes, ototoxic medications, or certain medical conditions are some common causes of this type of hearing loss.

Mixed Hearing Loss

This is a combination of conductive and sensorineural hearing loss.

Auditory Processing Disorders

Normal hearing but difficulty interpreting sounds in the brain.That means they hear speech at a normal level but don’t understand it very well.The causes are often unknown, but can be related to neurological or cognitive processing problems.

Frequently asking others to repeat the words

Difficulty understanding conversations in noisy environments, especially children’s and women’s voices.

Mishearing some words or confusing similar-sounding words.

Turning up the TV, radio, or phone volume

Ringing or buzzing in the ears (tinnitus)

Avoiding social situations

3) What should I do if I have these symptoms?

The first step is to visit a hearing care center and request a hearing evaluation.If your hearing loss is confirmed,follow the hearing care provider’s recommendations. You should also avoid prolonged exposure to loud noise and consult with your primary care physician to be further evaluated for any systemic disease that may be causing your hearing loss.
